Since the beginning of the 1990s, the artists of the East Asian performance-art movement have been working on new forms of expression of the body which they interpret in photographs, videos, documentary films, digital art and live performances. The House of World Cultures shows a selection of this new art: Multimedia works by 27 artists and artist groups from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

"It seems to me that Western art history has failed terribly in the record of its relationship to non-European cultures and has a definite tendency to mistranslate, misinterpret and denigrate art that has come from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America...Overall, contemporary performance art in East Asia, whether as a form of political protest or an expression of social and spiritual anguish, has taken cultural practice far beyond the walls of museum and gallery and causes us to reassess the way we derive meaning from art, and in particular the way we evaluate non-European art."
Seit Beginn der neunziger Jahre befassen sich die Künstler der ostasiatischen Performance-Kunstbewegung mit neuen Ausdrucksformen des Körpers und interpretieren sie in Fotografien, Videos, Dokumentarfilmen, Digitalkunst sowie Live-Performances. Das Haus der Kulturen der Welt zeigt eine Auswahl dieser neuen Kunst: Multimediale Werke von 27 Künstlern und Künstlergruppen aus China, Japan, Korea und Taiwan.

"Mir scheint, die westliche Kunstgeschichte ist in ihrem Verhältnis zu nicht-europäischen Kulturen nachhaltig gescheitert und neigt eindeutig zur Fehlübertragung, Fehlinterpretation und Verunglimpfung der Kunst aus Asien, Afrika, dem Nahen Osten und Südamerika...Überall hat die zeitgenössische Performance-Kunst in Ostasien, sei es als Form politischen Protests oder als Ausdruck gesellschaftlicher oder geistiger Besorgnis, die Kulturpraxis aus den Museen und Galerien hinaus geführt. Das fordert uns auf, die Art, wie wir Kunst beurteilen, neu zu überdenken, insbesondere bei der Bewertung nicht-europäischer Kunst."
