Rebab

The rebab, which originated in Indonesia, is a two-stringed spike fiddle with a heart-shaped soundbox. The bridge rests on a membrane of thin animal skin. The performer plays the rebab with a light bow, pulling the bow’s hairs to create tension. The strings are tuned in pelog, a scale similar to western major scales, and in slendro, which is related to minor scales. The Rebab plays a leading role in Javanese chamber music and is considered one of the most difficult instruments to master in the gamelan orchestra.
