How many modernities does contemporary music recognise?
3 p.m. | Tuesday, 20 January 2004

Gene Coleman has invited an international round of musicians and musicologists to his conference. The theme of this encounter will be the dichotomies of composition / improvisation and solo music / ensemble music in musical developments throughout the world.

The conference will have the character of an event with talks, discussions, examples of music and sounds, and live-music performances. The precise course of events will be determined in co-operation with the participants. Prepared statements will be just as decisive here as improvisation. Hence, the project will move between sense perception and theoretical reflection.
Whereas the afternoon programme of talks and discussions is primarily aimed at a specialist audience, evening events–presenting a variety of musical contributions–will be open to anyone who is interested.

Participants:

Gene Coleman, Maureen Fleming, Guillermo Gregorio, Dedy Hernawan, Jin Hi Kim, Mazen Kerbaj, Dieter Mack, Peter Margasak, Akikazu Nakamura, Toshimaru Nakamura, Sharif Sehnaoui, Ayo Sutarma
