From Tokyo, in silence …
8 p.m. | Saturday, 24 January 2004
Experiments with silence, space and minimal tonal gestures from Japan and Austria: parallel to Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura and Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Werner Dafeldecker, Michael Moser and Christof Kurzmann have been experimenting with tones, space and silence.
Taku Sugimoto’s guitar technique is noted for its subtle treatment of styles and minimal tonal gestures. He is considered one of the forerunners of a Tokyo music scene that explores extended periods of silence. Toshimaru Nakamura, who is interested in silence and the perception of sounds—even at the limits of the inaudible—uses a normal mixer as an instrument which he refers to as his “no-input mixing board”.
He connects the output channels of the mixer to one another in order to create feedback loops. Kazuhisa Uchihashi plays the guitar and daxophone, an instrument created by German musician Hans Reichel. Uchihashi’s style covers a broad range of tonal volumes and gestures.
