Women’s status has always been a criterion or indicator to show, no matter where in the world, whether a society is an open one, whether a society accepts pluralism. This applies to the Muslim world, too.

Mohamed Tozy, professor of political sciences in Casablanca and author of "The Monarchy and the Political Islam in Morocco", will chair a discussion about today’s debate concerning the reform of Mudauwana (the family law influenced by Islam). The discussion will focus on the role of Islam as lived in Morocco and on social traditions, religious institutions and the importance of Islamic reasoning in the field of politics. The discussion will also consider the relevance of those factors compared to other aspects. Maybe the discussion about the importance of Islam does not lead us to the central issues in the context of peoples’ living conditions and ideas. The "Islamic world” might be a common denominator, which does not necessarily stress the most relevant aspects to understand the societies labelled this way.
