Indo-Muslim culture, shamanism, ritual, movement for democracy
With IN TRANSIT, the House of World Cultures is introducing a new kind of festival structure to Berlin. This annual event centres on the Lab: a laboratory and forum for exchange for twenty to thirty artists. All the artists invited will be presenting their latest works, most of them world or European premieres, which will be performed to audiences in more than forty-five productions. Today's guest is Aidah Redza. The dancer an Choreographer explores and re-interprets the multi-ethnic aspects of Malay culture and art from the perspective of a Muslim woman. In her solo works, she confronts the shamanic traditions of her country with a highly individualized contemporary movement language. As choreographer of the group Shakti Dances, one of the first independent dance companies in Malaysia, she also assumes political responsibility for emancipation and human rights.
