Highlighting some of the motifs from Tony Williams’ original lifetime CD “Emergency” – which was later recognized by many musicians as the birth of what we call fusion today; as well as meditations on the immense contribution of the polyrhythms and African aesthetic in jazz explored by legendary drummer Elvin Jones. Drummer Cindy Blackman performing for 10 years with pop rocker Lenny Kravitz as well as leader of several jazz projects, she is the modern example of musicians that grew up surrounded by and exposed to the Black Atlantic’s many musics. Whether it is blues, rock, funk, latin or jazz music, the unification of these rhythmic languages is an urge that is expressed through many artists today. Through two of the most highly influential drum masters from the 60’s-90’s, her dialogue will focus on a meditation of their contributions to swing, afro-swing, rock, fusion, and liberation on of the drum set and what impact that has had on ideas of independence.
