King and Queen, Saint and Satan in one: In Brazil, João Fransicsco dos Santos (1900-1976), alias Madame Satã, has attained mythological status. Born into slavery, sold when he was only seven, he struggled for survival on the streets of Rio de Janeiro. Karim Aïnouzs film gives a kaleidoscopic image of João Fransicsco dos Santos life as petty crook, transvestite, street fighter, prisoner and father of seven adopted children and, at the same time, offers a multi-facetted picture of the Brazilian underworld in the 1930s.
