As the centenary of the Herero uprising is marked this year, Martin Baer's film recalls the near-extermination of the entire Herero population - one of the most violent chapters in German colonial history in southern Africa. Together, the director and his protagonist, Israel Kaunatjike, journey to Namibia, where they are both confronted with very different family histories. While Baer locates relatives who are descended from the first settlers in what was then German South-West Africa, Kaunatjike discovers his grandfathers were German soldiers and his direct family line most likely continued through rape.
