The increasing destruction of the environment plays a role in many of the works in subTerrain, as in photographer Raghu Rai's series on the aftermath of the poison gas tragedy of Bhopal, or in Sheeba Chhachhi’s multimedia installation "Neelkanth: poison/nectar", which examines uncontrolled urban sprawl. Iris Mahnke, the coordinator of subTerrain, explores the relationship between art and socio-political intervention. In 1999/2000 the art historian curated the Crown Jewels exhibition with London-based artists of Indian and Pakistani descent, and she edits the international network for art history www.arthist.net.
