Dahan is based on a well known incident, subsequently novelized, where a woman reporter observed and intervened in a case of sexual harrassment outside a Calcutta metro station. Ghosh takes the incident as a critical intersection of a number of lives: the intrepid citizen, in the film a school teacher; the victim, a woman who has married into a conservative, lower middle class family; and the girlfriend of the attacker. None of these women meet, and a particularly fragmented image of the city emerges from the secluded spaces in which each woman confronts the constraints of her own positioning.
