Mani Ratnam's version of "The Godfather" (1972) models its protagonist, Velu Naicker, on the life of the Bombay gangster, Varadarajan Mudaliar. Naicker emerges as the protector of the marginalised Tamil community in Bombay. Much of the narrative logic of the Coppola film is replayed, if through different character constellations. The film is notable for the charismatic performance of Kamalahasan in the lead role, a skilled condensation of the work of Brando and Pacino in the original source.
