RASALÎLA is an attempt to find a new approach toward musical dialogue between India and the West. In a process extending over many years, Indian classical musicians have explored the concepts and practice of contemporary Western art music in workshops, in musical dialogues with the Ensemble Modern and in exhaustive theoretical debates. Finally, in close collaboration with the musicians of the Ensemble Modern, they developed musical works that reflect a differentiated encounter between these two utterly disparate musical cultures on a sophisticated intellectual and musical level. Intercultural musical dialogues have been held on a number of issues: can Indian music even be expressed in notation? Can the improvisations of European music really live up to the strict standards of Indian musicians? Here these questions have given rise to surprising and highly individual answers. Program
