Kamilya Jubran, "Sabreen" |
In Mahattaat - the Arabic word for stations, points - the Palestinian singer and instrumentalist Kamilya Jubran sketches her musical career in a very personal way. The first station is her village: she got her musical training from her father and was influenced by the music of Oum Kalthoum, the legendary Egyptian singer. The songs of her group Sabreen - she has been its lead singer since 1982 - stand for the second station in Jerusalem and the search for new forms of expression between Arab and international music, as well as for an artistic expression for life under occupation. Finally, in Paris she worked with the bassist Sarah Murcia. She reached the last station - so far - in 2002 in Switzerland with the experimenter of electronic sounds, Werner Hasler. These different musical stations are bound together by the intensity and expressiveness of Kamilya Jubran's voice. The Swiss video artist Michael Spahr adds a new dimension to the concert with superimposed videos. After several appearances in Cairo, this will be Kamilya Jubran's first appearance in Berlin.
