Mercedes tells the story of Noubi, whose mother committed him to an insane asylum because he wanted to donate her fortune to the Egyptian Communist Party. Upon his release Cairo is completely foreign to him. When his uncle asks him to help look for his cousin Gamal, he descends into the city’s corrupt underworld. There, of all places, he finds happiness and people he can call his “family”.
