DisORIENTation will open with a speech by the Secretary General of the Arab League, Amre Mohamed Mussa, and a performance by the Egyptian pop and film star Mohamed Mounir. This will be followed by the opening of the exhibit of contemporary art, and beginning at 9:00 p.m. the Beirut group Soap Kills will perform. Until March 23 the opening weekend will plunge visitors straight into the cultural and political complexity of the projects' theme. The exhibition opening, concerts, readings, films and discussions will provide a pithy overview of artistic production and its context in the Middle East. Internationally renowned stars of literature, film, the visual arts and music, such as Elias Khoury, Elia Suleiman, Walid Raad and Mohamed Mounir will meet the new generation - Soap Kills, Lara Baladi and Jananne Al-Ani. As well, artist lectures provide an introduction to the exhibit of contemporary art. One focal theme is Palestine, with internationally-acclaimed films, a reading from Elias Khoury's novel "Gates of the City" and a conference on the construction of a Palestinian identity. Not only is Palestine at the heart of the current geopolitical situation, it is also a unique cultural challenge for the region's future.
