With the 1994 uprising to fight for the rights of the indigenous population in the south of Mexico, the Zapatistas came to symbolise the modern struggle for freedom in the era of globalisation. They were the first to use state-of-the-art media technologies to disseminate their ideas and aims. Overnight, their masks, poetically-crafted speeches and manifesto achieved worldwide attention.
