In 1969 the grande dame of Mexican literature created a new genre, the Mexican documentary novel, with “Hasta no verte, Jesús mío” (English title: “Here's Looking At You, Jesus”. It is based on interviews with a farm labourer whose life story becomes a disillusioning mirror of history. Ever since, Elena Poniatowska has lent a literary voice to those marginalized by society.
