The popdeurope 2004 finale can already be filed under G for "grande". This year's closing event showcases a musical fusion that can even stretch your experienced sound traveller's imagination. Thanks to the visionary drive and unbroken punk spirit of mastermind Aki Nawaz, Fun-Da-Mental has opened up whole new sound vistas, co-founding a specific style of Indian-Pakistani pop on the English music scene. Long before Panjabi MC's success, they were mixing radical dance floor beats with traditional Indian music, adding a shot of punk aesthetics, and fusing it into a sound you may love or hate, but just can't ignore. Fun-Da-Mental's set at popdeurope won't just focus on their new album. Instead, they are using the chance to experiment - taking the stage live with The Mighty Zulu Nation, a South African choir in the Ladysmith Black Mambazo tradition, a style the broad global public largely came to know and love after LBM's work with Paul Simon. The fusion between two autonomous musical directions into a highly danceable and unusual sound mix stands for those quintessentially popdeurope qualities - the excitement of sound culture clashes and the enrichment of intercultural dialogues.
