Dub and reggae mixed with South French folk, Afro and Latin rhythms, spiked with critical lyrics - Massilia Sound System from Marseilles is one of France's most successful pop-fusion bands. Started as a dancehall sound system, the band is the ultimate representation of the cultural diversity of this Mediterranean metropolis; it has developed into the voice of a culturally independent region. For more than ten years Massilia Sound System has stood for provocation and a sense of political mission, but their concerts are more like parties than manifestoes against socio-economic inequality. Massilia Sound System sees itself as the defender of a regional culture and as a proponent of cultural pluralism. That is why the musicians sing their rebellious texts in Occitan, as even their name shows: "Massilia" is the Provencal name of Marseilles, France's most important port and, after Paris, the largest community of North African immigrants.
