Dreamy music reminiscent of the 1001 Nights, ethereal clouds of sound - and then suddenly rhythms are unleashed, dancing dervishes in wool costumes, ecstatic dances: the Mercan Dede Ensemble's live act creates a bridge between the hypnotic-spiritual rhythms of Sufi music and contemporary forms of trance-like dance rituals inspired by ambient sounds, house or hardstep. In its latest project "Secret Tribe" the formation Mercan Dede shows that the ecstasy of the Oriental dervishes is not unlike the ecstatic states of present-day partygoers - and makes us realize how close the Orient is to the Occident.
