Yeongsanjae ritual
The Yeongsanjae ritual centers on Buddha's proclamation of the Lotus Sutra on Mount Grdhakuta, the Mountain of Vultures. In the Bongweonsa Temple this sutra, one of Buddhism's most important legacies, is cultivated and celebrated in unique fashion. In Korea the ritual itself has been proclaimed an inviolable cultural asset.

In the "White Lotus of the Genuine Truth" Buddha proclaims that there is only one path to truth, consisting in the presence of spirituality in the midst of the worldly. At the same time he gives his pupils the hope that all who set out on the road to enlightenment will attain their end.

The Yeongsanjae Ritual is a ceremony symbolizing this proclamation. According to Park in Gong, the head of the Bongweonsa Temple, "Through this we recognize Buddha's teachings and understand the true meaning of the Lotus Sutra – Thus all people can attain Buddha's protection and blessing and live in peace, harmony and happiness." The ceremony consists of several parts: the chanting of Buddhist sutras, Beompae, comparable to Gregorian chants, the butterfly dance Nabimu, the cymbal dance Baramu, and the drum dance Beogomu, performed by monks playing different kinds of drums, cymbals and gongs.
