Frédéric Bruly Bouabré was born in Zéprégüuhé, Ivory Coast, in 1923. Known as both artist and archivist, ouabrés work centers around his experiments with language. His construction of the alphabet for the Bété was published in 1958. Self named Sheik Nadro (one who doesnt forget), his negotiation of text and image began as a articular endeavor to sustain the memory and reconstruct the identity of the oral culture of the Bété. Bouabré lives and works in Abidjan.
