In Rasalîla, the Ensemble Modern and stars of classical Indian music present the results of their long-term collaboration for the first time. With the European-based composer Sandeep Bhagwati as its artistic director, the project brings together Indian tradition and the language of the musical avant-garde.
"Rasalîla" translates as “the play of emotions”. The project’s compositions react to the complex emotional states of today’s world and bring novel elements to Indian classical music, which is regarded as the only classical music tradition which even today is developing quite independently of Western musical thought. Inspired by intensive joint workshops which Sandeep Bhagwati has been conducting for almost two years, prominent Indian musicians have now developed compositions for the Ensemble Modern. As a counterpoint, Indian composers who are at home in the New Music of the west have created new works especially for Rasalîla. Bhagwati’s latest commissioned work for the Ensemble Modern, "Rasas", is one of the compositions that will be performed in the House of World Cultures from October 31 to November 2, 2003. The concerts will be accompanied by a symposium, films, radio dramas and a sound installation. The weekend will open with the performance of the live radio play "Meera – Unorthodoxies" (October 31, 8 p.m.) after the novel "Cuckold – Krishna’s Schadow" by Kiran Nagarkar. "Meera” tells the story of Mirabais, India’s most popular woman poet – and the role model for all uncompromising artists. She lived in the 16th century and abandoned the court and her husband to meet secretly with her mystical lover Krishna. Das Ensemble Modern und Stars der klassischen indischen Musik präsentieren mit Rasalîla erstmalig das Ergebnis ihrer langfristigen Zusammenarbeit. Das Projekt unter der künstlerischen Leitung des in Europa lebenden Komponisten Sandeep Bhagwati vereint indische Tradition mit avantgardistischer Musiksprache. "Rasalîla" heißt übersetzt soviel wie "Spiel der Gefühle". Die Kompositionen des Projekts reagieren auf die komplexen Gefühlslagen der heutigen Welt und bringen neuartige Elemente in die indische Kunstmusik ein. Diese gilt als die einzige Kunstmusiktradition, die sich auch heute noch ganz unabhängig vom westlichen Musikdenken entwickelt. Inspiriert durch intensive gemeinsame Workshops, die Sandeep Bhagwati seit fast zwei Jahren durchführt, haben nun berühmte indische Musiker für das renommierte Ensemble Modern Kompositionen entwickelt. Als Kontrapunkt dazu haben indische Komponisten, die in der westlichen Neuen Musik zu Hause sind, eigens für Rasalîla neue Werke geschaffen. Auch Bhagwatis neuestes Auftragswerk für das Ensemble Modern, "Rasas", ist unter den Kompositionen, die vom 31. Oktober bis 2. November 2003 im Haus der Kulturen der Welt zur Aufführung kommen. Umrahmt werden die Konzerte von einem Symposium, Filmen, Hörspielen und einer Klanginstallation. Das Wochenende eröffnet mit der Aufführung des Live-Hörspiels "Meera – Unorthodoxies" (31. Oktober, 20 Uhr) nach dem Roman "Cuckold - Krishnas Schatten" von Kiran Nagarkar. "Meera“ erzählt die Geschichte Mirabais, der populärsten Dichterin Indiens – und dem Vorbild aller kompromisslosen Künstler. Sie lebte im 16. Jahrhundert und verließ Hof und Gatten, um in der Einsamkeit ihrem mystischen Liebhaber Krishna zu begegnen.
