Invitation to Attend the Press Preview
>>> 10.a.m. on Thursday, 16th September 2004
>>> House of World Cultures
BLACK ATLANTIC
Exhibition and Film Programme
>>> 17 September – 15 November 2004

Dear Sir or Madam,
In the House of World Cultures from 17 September – 15 November, four artists – Isaac Julien, Keith Piper, Lisl Ponger and Tim Sharp – are showing their multimedia and film installations and photographic works within the framework of the BLACK ATLANTIC programme series (Curator: Shaheen Merali). These works on show here for the first time, including two especially commissioned by the House of World Cultures, reflect the dynamic and connecting lines of Black cultures in the space between the Americas, Africa and Europe. They confront issues around strategies of power over people, land and natural resources – in other words, just those processes that have been so especially prominent in the slavery, racism and colonialism that has shaped the history of Africa and the African Diaspora. Primarily using the medium of video and film, the artists take the viewers on expeditions around the Atlantic and into the everyday migrant world in Europe.
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the Press Preview on Thursday, 16 September 2004 at 10 a.m. in the House of World Cultures. After a short introduction explaining the concept behind this project, you will have the chance to visit the exhibition together with the curator Shaheen Merali and the artists themselves.
Afterwards, at around 11.30, we will be showing the film BaadAsssss Cinema by Isaac Julien, (USA 2003, 58 min) to give you a taste of the accompanying film series (co-curated by Fatima El-Tayeb). Isaac Julien’s documentary uses interviews and film extracts to cast a new light on the years of Blaxploitation – the brief but influential phase of commercially independent Black cinema in the early 1970s. After the screening, Isaac Julien will be present to answer your questions personally.
BLACK ATLANTIC is sponsored by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes.
We are looking forward to seeing you.
Best regards
Christine Regus
