Even under Soviet rule, women in Central Asia found themselves caught up in a conflict between traditional roles and their publicly propagated emancipated role.
Since the region became independent, the conflict has shifted to the contradiction between womens traditional role and one offering completely new opportunities within a market-oriented society. Many women have succeeded in overcoming this apparent contradiction in role patters. During the past few years, a number of NGOs have arisen which try to advance the interests of women in the most diverse areas. This symposium aims to thematise both the complexity of the role patters and the function of womens NGOs, as well as bring together women sociologists, journalists and scientists to discuss these issues.
