Kara Lynch's film traces the history of Afro-Americans in the Soviet Union, from their immigration in the 1930s until shortly before the end of the Socialist system. In a series of interviews with Afro-Russians aged between 10 to 65, including a writer, a concert singer, and a businessman, Black Russians explores their varied experiences. What does it mean to be Black and Russian? What is it like to call oneself Russian yet have this identity denied by a major part of one's fellow citizens?
Kara Lynch's concern is to question how marginalized bodies are represented. She locates herself within the Black and queer tradition of constructing theory, the same theory she applies to her own films.
