Reading and Discussion

Natalio Hernández is a bilingual teacher of Spanish and Náhuatl. He is considered to be Mexico’s most successful indigenous writer. In 1994 Javier Castellanos Martínez published the very first indigenous novel in the Zapoteca language of the Sierra. He is an active cultural mediator between the indigenous population and the Spanish-Mexicans.

The discussion that follows focuses on the literary self-understanding of the authors. What roles are played by the different languages when writing, the tension between Spanish and one’s “own” language?
