The music of Torbat-e-jum in the Northeast Iran emerged from the Sufi tradition and is cultivated by a Suni community: mystical poems by Rumi, Attar and Jumi are performed as songs, accompanied by the two-stringed dotar. The repetitive melodies are traditionally played at religious festivities and family celebrations. Their great intensity sends musicians and listeners alike into a state of transcendental experience. Introductory lecture by Mohamed Reza Derwichi at 6:00 p.m.
