Does the increased use of the visual media improve the visual intelligence of the viewers, or are they merely manipulated more effectively? This question is examined by the conference Frames of Viewing, organized by the House of World Cultures in cooperation with the Getty Research Institute for the History of Art and the Humanities in Los Angeles. The Institutes activities are aimed at promoting a more comprehensive understanding of the visual arts. The combination of cognitive sciences, the humanities, ethnology, philosophy and media studies gives rise to new approaches in cognitive and pictorial theory which will be discussed by international experts at this conference.
