| For the first time in the series initial rehearsals did not take place in Berlin. At workshops organised by Jean-Paul Bourelly in Cairo and El-Minya in March, young Egyptian musicians came together with the bassist B.B. Hammond – who has already worked with the doyen of Nubian music Ali Hassan Kuban – and the drummer Félix Sabal Lecco, both currently members of the rhythm section of “Boom Bop”. Along with the dramatist Tarek Abou El Fetouh, who knows the Egyptian arts scene well, they selected young talents for the project such as the singers Leila Sami, Salib Fawzy and Bassem Wadia, all of whom have been involved for years with the musical traditions of Egypt. The instrumentation for Back Room X ranges from oud to guitar, with Egyptian percussion instruments playing a prominent role. We would like to invite you to a Back Room rehearsal at the House of World Cultures on Wednesday 9 April at 6.30 pm. Jean-Paul Bourelly and Tarek Abou El Fetouh will introduce the participating artists and be available for interviews afterwards. The occasional series “The Back Room”, developed by Jean-Paul Bourelly in collaboration with the House of World Cultures, has been in existence since 1999 and sees itself as a laboratory for musical innovation. Musicians and performers from Germany and abroad come together for five to 14 days for period of concentrated experimentation and investigation into new musical possibilities – perhaps by improvising within a given structure or on a particular theme. The goal is a lively dialogue between traditional and contemporary artists, international stars and local scenes, experienced musicians and young talent.
