Portrait Africa
A Century of Photographic Standpoints
A first in Germany, the exhibit "Portrait Africa" in the House of World Cultures showed around 300 works by 40 photographers from Africa and the so-called Black Diaspora in Europe and the USA. The exhibit was the prelude to the program "Africa. On the Move" in the year 2000. With concerts, a film series, artist dialogues, lectures, discussions and a youth program, it was devoted to a completely different picture of the African continent: cities and their current transformations.
On the following pages you can visit the seven thematic sections of "Portrait Africa", with a wealth of pictures and artist biographies, as well as informative texts and excerpts from interviews.
The exhibit "Portrait Africa" was developed in cooperation with Afrique en Creation and Revue Noire Paris, The Autograf London, South African National Gallery Cape Town, the Pigozzi Collection Genf, Institut fuer Afrikanistik Koeln, Rencontres de la Fotografie Africaine Bamako
