ISKORPIT
Contemporary Art from Turkey

In 1998, with the exhibit "Iskorpit - Contemporary Art from Turkey", the House of World Cultures showed an overview bringing together the works of three generations of Turkish artists from the last 20 years. In Turkish, Iskorpit refers to a fish from the depths of the Bosporus which is considered a delicacy despite its poisonous spines. Thus the title of the exhibit is a metaphor for a contemporary Turkish art which deals quite critically with conditions in Turkey. The following pages offer an overview of Turkey's art scene: 14 Turkish artists are presented, while in-depth texts discuss Turkish cultural policy and the discourse of contemporary art in the 90s.
